Filling In the Wealth Gap
Writer: Ayaan Parikh Editor: Aditya Joshi One of the major topics discussed in the world today is the wealth inequality present in our nation. Many people are arguing that the wealthier families are getting richer, while the less fortunate families are merely getting poorer and are finding it harder to make a living. This debate has become a very large political discussion that many have varying opinions about. But one aspect we always seem to leave out is what happens to the education of the children of low-income families. We seem to forget that although we can debate and amend things to make the lifestyle of the family better, the child still needs a quality education. Eric Son, a local Wichita leader, set out to fix this. Eric founded a mentorship program that connects tutors with those in need of tutoring, called Tutoring Harmony. This symbiotic relationship is a result of the need for tutors to get community service hours, and the need for the tutee to get a boost in their academic work. Eric says that creating this platform has led to his progress in many aspects of his personal life. He says that he’s improved in leadership, communication, networking, problem-solving and much more. Eric describes that one of the key aspects of establishing and continuing this business was networking and getting people to use the service. He says that once he started getting out there and began talking to people, it became a chain reaction and there was an influx of people who wanted to join.
